The storm & hail roof inspection checklist
Everything to check on a damage inspection, organized the way you work the roof — surface, soft metals, interior, and the documentation that gets claims approved. Check items off as you go, or print it and take it up the ladder.
Roof surface
Walk the field and every slope. Look for hail bruising and wind damage on each plane.
Soft metals & accessories
Soft metals dent before shingles show damage — they’re your best evidence of a hail event.
Interior & attic
Confirm whether storm damage let water in. Interior signs strengthen the claim.
Documentation for the claim
Photos and notes win supplements. Capture everything before you leave the property.
Turn this checklist into a carrier-ready photo report
HailMate’s photo & file storage gives your crew a guided checklist on the roof, so every test square and soft-metal dent is captured, labeled, and organized for the claim — no more denied claims over a missing photo.
How to use this checklist on an inspection
Start on the ground with the soft metals — gutters, downspouts, and any HVAC fins. Dents there are the clearest sign a hail event actually hit the property, and they’re easy to photograph for the adjuster.
On the roof, mark a 10-by-10 test square on each slope, circle the hits in chalk, and count the impacts. Most carriers look for a threshold number of hits per test square, so document every slope, not just the worst one.
Finish in the attic and the rooms below to confirm whether water got in. Then capture the full set of photos and measurements before you leave — going back for a missing shot costs you a trip and slows the claim.
