What is a public adjuster?
A licensed adjuster the homeowner hires to represent their interests against the carrier — usually for a percentage of the claim.
A public adjuster works for the homeowner, not the insurance company. The homeowner hires them to inspect the damage, file the claim, and negotiate a fair settlement — typically in exchange for a percentage of whatever the claim pays.
On large or disputed claims, a public adjuster can be a roofer’s ally because they’re pushing the carrier toward a complete scope. On smaller jobs, their fee can eat into the budget, so it’s worth understanding who’s involved and how they’re paid.
Public adjusters are regulated by state and can’t do contracting work on the same claim. Knowing the difference between a public adjuster and the carrier’s adjuster keeps you clear on who’s representing whom.
