What is first notice of loss (FNOL)?
The moment the homeowner tells the carrier a loss happened — the phone call or online form that officially opens the claim.
First notice of loss, or FNOL, is the first report of damage to the insurance company. It is what turns a damaged roof into a claim number, and it starts the clock on inspection, adjustment and payment.
The homeowner has to make it. A contractor can sit beside them, help them find the policy number and the date of loss, and coach them on what to say — but reporting the loss is the policyholder’s call to make, and in most states a contractor speaking for them on coverage strays into adjusting without a license.
What you say at FNOL sets the tone for the entire file. “My roof is leaking” opens a repair conversation. “There was a hail event at my address on this date and I want the roof inspected for storm damage” opens a storm claim with a date attached. Same house, very different starting point.
